Intumescent Coatings: A Cost-Effective Fire Protection Solution
Why remove and replace existing substrate to meet FRR requirements when you can increase the FRR of an existing fire-separating element with each coat of intumescent coating applied?
AR PLUS IS HERE TO SAVE YOU!
Understanding Intumescent Coatings
Definition of Intumescent Coatings
A substance which swells as a result of heat exposure, increasing in volume and density.
- Activates at around 200C
- Expansion 40-60x of DFT
- Char insulates substrate from heat
Challenges in Upgrading Passive Fire Protection Systems
- Comprehension – Understanding the technical Existing Systems and using the approved and compliant materials. Failure to do so creates non-compliant fire separating elements.
- Complexity – Addressing Access and Penetrations – complex and restricted spaces like riser shafts and emergency stairwells/hallways, with their requirement of access and multitude of service penetrations needing to be addressed/disconnected.
- Compliance – Lack of tested and endorsed systems, training and education, robust product documentation and unified collaboration and coordination amongst trades can create a lot of margins for error and non-compliance.
- Corner Cutting – Time restraints and schedule changes, especially on large time-sensitive projects, create pressure on trades and leads to non-compliant processes being taken, non-compliant materials being used, and health and safety measures being ignored.
- Current Approach – The current approach of either installing additional plasterboard or replacing existing plasterboard with a tested and endorsed system has a large environmental impact, exuberant labour, material, and demolition costs, and requires a substantial time investment.
INTUGUARD FBL-100 SOLVES ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS!
What is INTUGUARD FBL-100?
INTUGUARD FBL-100 Fire and Thermal Barrier Latex FBL-100 is a single component, hard, durable, waterborne, acrylic co-polymer latex, thin film intumescent coating for interior fire protection of ferrous and non-ferrous substrates.
- New Zealand’s only tested & endorsed passive fire coatings system
- Low Environmental Impact
- Low VOC, low odour, anti-microbial
- Durable, high impact resistance, water & heat resistant
- Achieves a Level 4 finish
- Easy Onsite application (One team applies approx. 250m2 a day)
INTUGUARD achieves a FRR of 60/60/60 (tested to AS1530.4:2014), providing endorsed compliance with the NZBC on the following interior substrates:
Timber framed walls (exposed to fire from either or both sides) or Timber framed floor/ceiling systems (exposed to fire from below), lined with the following:
- 13 mm Standard Plasterboard
- 15 mm Fibrous Plasterboard
- 6 mm Fibre Cement Sheet
- 12 mm Plywood & Unlined Timber framed floor/ceiling systems (exposed to fire from below)
So we ask again…
Why remove and replace existing substrate to meet FRR requirements when you can increase the FRR of an existing fire-separating element with each coat of intumescent coating applied?
It’s a no-brainer!
